So You Want a Pet...
What Does It Mean to Own a Pet?

So You Want a Pet…
When we open our doors to welcome pets into our lives, we know that we will normally outlive them. We know this, but yet we do not fully understand it. When we first bring them home we, just like them, are in the learning stages. They, normally, have to learn the daily routine and how to go potty in the correct locations. We generally need to learn to have patience as they learn when and where to go potty.
The excitement of having a new pet does fade, as life becomes more hectic and routines are established. It is not that we love our pets any less, it is just that there are so many things demanding our attention. Sometimes we get overwhelmed and forget that we are their everything. Sometimes we are just too tired to play or go for walks. It doesn’t make you a bad pet parent, it makes you human.
Throughout the course of our lives we share with our beloved pets there will be times where we will feel guilty for one reason or another. Remember, as long as you are loving and caring for your pets, ensuring they have adequate food, water and shelter; they will love you regardless. They do not care about individual days, for they live for each moment. They are just waiting for the moments where your attention is entirely devoted to them. Watch how quickly they perk up when you grab their leash or favorite toy.
Now are all pets created equal? This is an interesting question, I may be a little biased in my thoughts on it since I currently have three dogs and grew up with cats. I believe the individual importance of any pet is really between the pet parent and the pet. Who can truly say what bond formed is more important than another? For me, I have been blessed to have had amazing cats in my life that knew when I needed a soothing purr with soft fur to calm a bad day. I also have amazing dogs that sense when it is important to get out for a stroll or maybe a game of throw and chase (they don’t always bring the ball back).
I have had multiple fish in my life that I took a lot of pride in tank design and keeping them alive for many years. For me, it was sad when they passed, but not as devastating as when my first dog passed. I have never owned any type of bird so I cannot speak on them. I do know that some birds live a very long time and have connections with their caretakers. We can go down the list of all the animals and reptiles that have become companions to those who opened their doors to them, but I think it could easily turn into a novel instead of a blog.
The important thing here is that we take the time to consider all the things when we are thinking of opening our home to any sort of pet. Do we have time for them, to train them, to care for them and to be present for them as they will be present for us? Do we understand the behaviors and characteristics of our pet? Can we afford the care and food that they need? It is important to know what to expect, as it is not only what can this pet do for me, but what I must be able to do for this pet.
Bringing any pet home to become part of the family means one will be there for their pet up to the very end. No pet should ever just be discarded or abandoned. This is why you should research the type of pet you want. While they are only a small part of our lives, we are their entire lives.
